Upsell Bundles ("This item" variant not syncing)

When a customer selects a different colour at the main product section, this change does not reflect in the upsell bundles "this item".
For example, when the customer selects a black shirt instead of the default white, I'd expect this variant change to automatically reflect in the "upsell bundles" section. However, it is still showing the "default white" shirt as "this item". Help. Thanks
